Japan Karate-do Ryobu-Kai (The Association of Martial Arts Excellence) ‘JKR’ is a professional, international, karate organization founded by Yasuhiro Konishi Soke (1893 – 1983), and further developed by his son, Yasuhiro (Takehiro) Konishi (1931 – 2017) 10th Dan. JKR branches are located all over the world and are currently under the leadership of Kiyoshi Yamazaki, 9th Dan, who serves as Kaicho (President).

The style of karate taught by the JKR is called Shindo Jinen Ryu which translates to “godly, natural style, complete empty-handed way”. Yasuhiro Konishi Soke’s dojo, the Ryobu-Kan (The House of Martial Arts Excellence) opened in Tokyo in 1927, serving as the headquarters for Nihon (Japan) Karate-do Ryobu-Kai. Yasuhiro Konishi Soke learned karate from the founder of Shotokan Karate-do, Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Goju-Ryu Karate, Chojun Miyagi, the founder of Shito-Ryu Karate, Kenwa Mabuni, and the noted fighter and Shuri-te and Tomari-te, and founder of Motobu-Ryu, Choki Motobu. Additionally, Konishi Sensei studied extensively under the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba. The JKR also has a lineage dating back to the 16th century traditions of Takenouchi Ryu Jujitsu.

Training in the JKR is conducted in the traditional Japanese method, stressing discipline, consistent attendance, etiquette, and hard work. Karate instruction is life-long, and can be continued regardless of age. Modern training in Shindo Jinen Ryu karate-do incorporates elements of karate, aikido, jujitsu, and kendo in the formal curriculum, with emphasis on philosophy and education. The curriculum also emphasize Zanshin (the ability of an exponent to gain dominance over an opponent through an alert state of mind) and the maintenance of proper physical posture.

The purpose in Shindo Jinen Ryu karate-do is to develop the whole human being, physically and mentally. Through long-term, dedicated training, students learns to develop and unite Shin (mind), Gi (technique), and Tai (body) in proper proportions. The end result is awareness of one’s moral obligations and place in society.

As a direct student of Kaicho Kiyoshi Yamazaki, appointed to the board of the JKR IYEC (Japan Karate-do Ryobu-Kai International Yudanshakai Executive Council), having served as Kaicho’s uchi deshi on more than one occasion, and bringing decades of personal experience training with Kaicho Yamazaki, and various other incredible Sensei’s, competing nationally and internationally, and teaching around the world. I will share many of the lessons that I have been blessed to have learned and continue to learn. By way of easy-to-follow video tutorials, virtual classes and more, I will share with you some of the Kata (set forms) practiced within the JKR / Shindo Jinen Ryu Karate-do curriculum, and share simple and effective self-defense techniques, applications (Bunkai) and training drills that will help boost confidence, develop and maintain your personal space, and create a general feeling of wellbeing, for one’s mind, body and spirit.
